The Search for Practical CVT Science
Continuously Variable Transmissions have been around for a long time. The first toroidal CVT concept was patented in the 18th century, but had to wait for the industrial revolution and traction fluid technology before it could be manufactured. But it was not until the early 1980s that practical applications became viable. Early CVTs, whilst proving the efficacy of the engineering concept, relied on traction fluid and/or pure rubber belts to create the friction interface to change the radius between two interfacing/ planetary metal surfaces. The resultant heat generation, vibration and friction losses have characterised early CVT technology ever since.
Breakthrough Technology will Revolutionise Gearbox Applications
Recognising the need for a design that eliminated these shortcomings in CVT technology, inventor, Dr. Jan Naude, set out to develop the prototypes that would lead to his revolutionary innovations.
His efforts resulted in the development of the unique Naudic iCVT and the Naudic rotorCVT, for which patents have been successfully applied in 15 countries. These patents represent an entirely new concept and not an improvement on prior CVT technologies.
Barloworld CVT Technologies, was formed in October 2001 and was the culmination of negotiations between partners Dr. Jan Naude, Marinus van den Ende and Barloworld Equipment, a division of the global Barloword group.
Varibox CVT Technologies becomes an independent entity
January 2009 marked the coming of age of Varibox CVT Technologies, previously known as Barloworld CVT technologies, as we are now able to continue our endeavours as a separate entity from the Barloworld Group. Following a management buyout, as well as the investment of a number of investors, Varibox CVT Technologies was established. We want to thank Barloworld for the period of time that they supported the R&D phase until we are now able to stand on our own feet, so to speak, and continue on our path to penetrate the gearbox industry and bring about major change in this industry.
The new Board is of the view that the branding and name of Varibox CVT Technologies is more focused on the core of the business and indicative to the market of the company’s purpose.
